The seventh edition of “East Meets West” International Student Petroleum Congress & Career Expo was held during 20–22 April in Krakow, Poland, at AGH University of Science and Technology.

Approximately three hundred students attended from more than twenty countries and the event received support from petroleum industry companies.

Of particular interest to attendees was the debate about current economic problems within the industry, their origins, and solutions for the future. Panel experts for this year included Cezary Filipowicz, country manager at United Oilfield Services; Tomasz Rybczak, chief executive officer at Slovnaft Poland; Piotr Starostka, senior manager at EY Business Advisory; and Jakub ‘Jimmy’ Ślęk, drilling consultant at Halliburton.

During the event, attending students shared the results of their scientific research in the form of presentations and posters. The judges noted the exceptionally high level of competition, with the winners showing creative and unorthodox solutions to particular problems.

Winners of this year’s contests:

Paper Contest: Erini Adamopoulou from Greece (DTU Denmark)

Poster Session: Nicola Zivelonghi and Christian Mudrak from Austria (NTNU Trondheim)

PhD Panel: Riverson Oppong from Ghana (Gubkin Russian State University)

Attending students also participated in workshops conducted by company representatives from FMC Technologies and National Oilwell Varco.
