The SPE Lagos Section is announced the winner of the 2020 Ambassador Lecturer Program (ALP) Outstanding Section Award for hosting the most ALP events in its region.

ALP is an initiative managed by the Young Member Engagement Committee (YMEC) to help SPE sections educate, inspire, and develop the skills of students interested in oil and gas.

The section officers said that beyond the accolades and recognition that often come as a reward for good work, what motivated the section to run as many ALP events as it did was a sincere desire to impact lives and a genuine passion to deliver value through technical, professional, and social engagements.

To boost participation in the ALP, the section used a strategy to encourage their young professional (YP) volunteers and student chapters by facilitating each ALP. This involved disbursement of stipends to volunteers to assist with travel costs for physical events and data subscription for virtual events. The feedback received from the events were inspiring; during one of such engagements in a public secondary school, the YP volunteer observed that the school lacked a physics teacher and decided to organize Saturday physics classes for the final year students.

Winning the award for the first time, the Lagos Section officers said that they are gratified that the section’s effort and results are being recognized and rewarded by SPE, and that they feel encouraged to do more.

The section thanks all their YP volunteers and student chapter presidents of Covenant University, Federal University of Technology Akure, Lagos State University, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Ibadan, and University of Lagos for delivering these ALPs , and for not being adversely affected by the global pandemic and coming up with innovative ways to leverage the virtual space. The section also extends its appreciation to the section board members and other resources for their support, and to the schools who opened their gates to the volunteers.
