During 7-14 August, SPE Balikpapan Section, in partnership with IATMI-Indonesia Tengah Timur Commissariat, held the Central & Eastern Indonesia Petroleum Summit (CEIPS 2021), the largest oil and gas event conducted in central and eastern Indonesia this year. The event was developed around a central topic of "Business as Unusual: Paradigm Shift in the Era of Change," and served as a platform to explore opportunities that the region has to offer in terms of exploration, production, and utilization of oil and gas, as well as to discuss secondary topics such as Indonesia energy outlook, digital disruption, emerging of renewable energies, and leadership forums.

Tutuka Ariadji, general director of oil and gas at the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of Indonesia, discussed the institutional vision of the oil and gas industry in Indonesia by 2030. Ariadji emphasized that collaboration and technology are key elements toward cost reductions and efficiency during high-volatility and uncertainty scenarios. Other panelists, Wimbuh Nawa Nugroho (Petronas Carigali Indonesia) and Chandra Asmara (Pertamina Power Indonesia) explained the framework of net-zero carbon emissions and the synergy among the emerging technologies and the new configuration of the energy matrix.

During the leadership session, Iswahyuni Fifthana Hayati (SPE Asia Pacific Technical Advisory Committee) and Shauna Noonan (2020 SPE President) talked about the importance of generating and developing technical knowledge as a way to accelerate career progress. Additionally, both raised a relevant and well-known topic: mitigating the diversity and inclusion gap by promoting and generating equal opportunities for everyone.

Besides the main summit, CEIPS 2021 also offered other professional development events such as CEIPS Awards, young professional luncheon, diversity & inclusion sessions, student energy quest challenges, Energy4Me sessions, and coral restoration program. A total of 19 technical sessions and 11 professional development programs brought together more than 1,000 participants around the world.
