In March, under the scope of the monthly technical meeting organized by the SPE Ghana Section, Graham Mensa-Wilmot, CEO and technical director at XCIDrill Technology, spoke to African young professionals (YPs) on the theme “Engineering, Opportunities, Challenges, and Adaptations: Preparation for successful Careers”.

Mensa-Wilmot shared his personal perspectives on career development as well as others’ experiences with YPs, and used a real-life deepwater career experience as a case study describing it from a non-technical perspective. He shared his advice on many topics of importance to YPs such as the role of engineering in the oil and gas industry, operator and service companies career options, the importance of developing a professional network, how to develop a strong mentality to succeed in your career, the role of a technical or managerial personality, adaptability, and continuous education, among others.

Petroleum Engineering, whereas gratifying in many respects, presents daunting professional challenges.

A 2016-2017 SPE Distinguished Lecturer, Mensa-Wilmot said, “Engineers are problem solvers who must always be pushed by creative and innovative outlooks. These expectations, in addition to fueling economic growth in all countries, present numerous career opportunities in every industry.”

…These [current] challenges must be the proving ground for our best engineers. To thrive under these conditions, it is best for petroleum engineering professionals in Africa, particularly Ghana, to know and understand how these factors and conditions influence their careers. Such alertness will enable appropriate and timely adaptations that are needed to promote successful careers.”
