During 24–25 February, SPE Java Section presented its new flagship program called the Annual Energy Symposium (AES) under the theme “Fueling Indonesia’s Future Through Energy Collaboration” and highlighted the country’s strategy to thrive in the future energy landscape. This virtual symposium gathered leaders, regional experts, government representatives, students, and prominent researchers for discussions around challenges, strategy, and best practices.

The symposium offered 10 series of events with 18 speakers. It was organized into the technical pre-event comprising Technical Group Discussions (TGDs), Integrated Simulation Workshop, and Student Case Study Competition, and the main event comprising Grand Plenary, Technical Panels, Women in Energy, HR Talk, and Award Night.

Technical Pre-Event

The AES highlighted unconventional reservoirs into two TGD series. The first was presented by Belladona Maulianda from Pertamina, and covered the importance of subsurface research and study acceleration in carbon, capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). Maulianda presented the fundamental and general strategy of enabling CCUS technology as a stepping-stone for Indonesia’s pathway to becoming carbon neutral. In the second TGD, Sri Mulyani from Schlumberger, delivered the novel 5G workflow for fracture modeling and well placement in the geothermal field. The topics were deemed important to understand the alternative technology amid the energy mix and transition scenario.

As part of the section’s commitment to fueling the next-generation industry leaders, the pre-event series targeted university students. The students participated in the Case Study Competition on potential CCUS deployment in Indonesia. A total of 24 students (divided into 5 teams) from different backgrounds and various universities were selected as finalists of the competition. They were designated work on technical cases and the winner was selected after the presentation during the event by judges Bobby Yudistira, BP; Richard Arnold, Medco E&P; and Handita Sutoyo, NTNU.

Training instructors Adela Cynthia Devi and Karen Sondakh led the Integrated Simulation Workshop. The workshop encompassed subsurface and surface topics and provided two sessions with two different simulation software training.

Main Event

The main event lined up high-profile speakers from Indonesia’s oil and gas industry. Grand Plenary Session discussed reshaping Indonesia’s Energy Future Through Collaboration and hosted Djoko Siswanto, Dewan Energy Nasional/National Energy Council; Ali Nasir, Premier Oil, a Harbour Energy Company; Fadli Rahman, Pertamina; and Purnomo Yusgiantoro, Purnomo Yusgiantoro Center. In the session, the speakers discussed the comprehensive strategy of energy security and sustainability, including the challenges and opportunities.

Following the plenary, the panel discussions by industry experts reviewed technical strategies:

  • A discussion on innovative well optimization programs in the oil and gas industry presented case studies and best practices toward operational excellence and cost-efficiency programs.
  • The second discussion focused on reducing carbon footprint initiatives and CCUS.

The second day of the event focused on professional development:

  • The “Women in Energy Talk: Oil and Gas Transition Innovations to Achieve Energy Mix and Net Zero by 2050” talked about women's important roles in the industry and encouraged young women engineers to pursue their career forward.
  • The “HR Talk: The Future of Oil and Gas for Fresh Graduates” demonstrated the link between industry and university partnerships. The speakers sent a clear message that industry and university should work hand in hand to shape future professional competence into excellence.

The symposium closed with the Award Night where SPE Lifetime Members were recognized and Student Case Study winners were announced.
