As one of the most vibrant SPE sections, the SPE Lagos Section in Nigeria is driven by innovative and sustainable programs focused on human capacity development, giving back to society, raising awareness through SPE Cares, empowering students through scholarships, and mentoring the leaders of tomorrow through various programs for the younger generation.
Established in 1973, with more than a thousand members it is one of the largest SPE section in Nigeria. Throughout its 49 years of existence, the section has driven events sponsorship from indigenous, national, and international oil gas companies, and other companies beyond the oil and gas industry.
Each year, the section holds the Annual General Meeting (AGM) to strategically review programs, track financial records, and elect new leaders and board that will spearhead activities of the section for another year. This year’s AGM was held on 30 July as a Nigerian-culture-themed event, which centered on a colorful display of the country’s culture. Nigeria is a great country with a rich culture, and this theme aptly gave the event another interesting outlook, especially for the members of the section who aren’t from Nigeria. 2022 SPE President Kamel Ben-Naceur and SPE Nigeria Council board members were in attendance.
The SPE Lagos section's main activities are monthly technical meetings, distinguished lecturer series, young professionals programs, and the Annual Technical Symposium. The section supports six student chapters:
- University of Ibadan
- University of Lagos
- Lagos State University
- Covenant University
- Obafemi Awolowo University
- Federal University of Technology Akure
To disseminate knowledge and share the mission and vision of SPE with the younger generation in various schools, the section champions the student-based program called the Catch Them Young (CTY). It encourages STEM education and creates awareness of oil and gas careers among students. Some highlights of the CTY program are career talks, school visits, essay writing and quiz competition, and recognition of talented students at the AGM.
During the AGM, the new section chairperson, Priscilla Enwere was elected. An accomplished award-winning energy professional and active SPE member, Enwere has brought around 15 years of professional and leadership experience both in her current and previous SPE roles. She is the 47th section chair from the formation of the section in 1973.
