Carl Steffensen

International Energy Case Competition Program Manager Switch Energy Alliance

Geologist and Chicago native Carl Steffensen has over 40 years collaborative industry experience and team leadership with ARCO, Vastar, BP, Statoil/Equinor, and Viking GeoSolutions LLC. During his career he has worked a variety of exploration and production projects in the US, Mexico, and Latin America, with a focus on basin analysis, carbonate and siliciclastic depositional systems, and petroleum systems.

Steffensen spent 14 years working on new country access opportunities, with particular focus on Mexico and leading collaboration workshops with numerous exploration teams within PEMEX. His experience also includes responsibility for technical assurance of global exploration opportunities providing a consistent measure of risk, resources and ranking, sustaining industry-leading standards and delivering practical coaching of technical exploration methodology and workflows to deliver quality opportunities.

Steffenson joined SEA in 2022 as program manager for their annual Switch Competition. He has more than 15 years’ experience in college recruiting and mentoring, has served in many positions with both the Houston Geological Society and the AAPG, currently serves as an AAPG Associate Editor and is an AAPG Fellow and AAPG Certified Petroleum Geologist, as well as a Texas Licensed Geologist. Steffensen has served as a Board member of the Danish Club of Houston, the Museum of Danish America, and the Rebild National Park Society, is fluent in both Danish and Spanish, and enjoys travel, water sports, fitness activities, and classic cars. Carl resides in west Houston, and he and his wife Frances have 2 adult daughters and 4 grandchildren.

He holds a BS and MS in geology.
