Kyle Haustveit, SPE, has been confirmed as the 16th Assistant Secretary for the US Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy (FE). In this role, he oversees FE and the National Energy Technology Laboratory, managing a $5- billion R&D portfolio in coal, oil, natural gas, and critical minerals to advance affordable, reliable energy solutions.
A North Dakota native and third-generation energy worker, Haustveit previously worked at Devon Energy, where he established global diagnostic techniques for hydraulic fracturing and later led investments in emerging technologies such as geothermal, carbon utilization, lithium extraction, and produced water treatment.
In 2022, Haustveit was named a TWA Energy Influencer and shared his perspective on the emerging trends in subsurface engineering in an SPE Live episode.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering from Montana Tech and an MBA in energy from the University of Oklahoma.
