Heriot-Watt University has launched what it is calling the world’s first university-led online course dedicated to carbon dioxide removal (CDR), addressing the shortage of skilled professionals in this rapidly expanding industry. The course, carbon dioxide removal from a systems perspective, equips graduates and professionals with tools to evaluate CDR methods within complex energy, industrial, and policy systems. The curriculum covers topics such as geochemical and technological removal methods, life cycle assessments, and storage solutions.
“We are very excited to develop this course, because we’ve been working on carbon dioxide removal for such a long time, but we realized that there really wasn’t anything out there for professionals that want to transition to the CDR space,” said Associate Professor and course lead, Mijndert van der Spek.
Fully online and self-paced, the course offers university credit and access to further professional development, aiming to build the expertise needed to scale CDR and meet global climate targets.
