Montana Technological University announced it will host its annual ‘Tech Day’ on 7 March. The event is a hands-on college visit taking place at the university in Butte, Montana. This event offers prospective high school students and transfer students interactive lab sessions, campus tours, and opportunities to explore academic programs. Tech Day 2025 is set to offer a variety of interactive experiences for potential students ranging from a cadaver dissection lab to a Microsoft Power BI-themed Jeopardy competition.

The program will also offer several options for students interested in joining the energy industry including:

  • Computer Science and Software Engineering: Students will see how a classic game leads to discussion for more advanced games, machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), and the ethical and moral dilemmas that can come from AI applications.
  • Environmental Engineering: Explore drone-based remote sensing data collection in water resources, engineering, and mine waste remediation projects.
  • Mining Engineering: Get to see what happens when chemical energy is released and learn about the importance of safety in mining through a virtual reality (VR) experience.
  • Petroleum Engineering: Join the petroleum engineering department as they take a spin through our state-of-the-art laboratories with demonstrations.

Kylie Acord who attended Tech Day in 2022 is now a sophomore at the university majoring in mining engineering and also serves as the university’s first female teaching assistant to Scott Rosenthal in courses taught in the Underground Mine Education Center.
“For the Electrical Engineering session, we took little tiny robots and programmed them to follow a line on a table,” Acord said. “For the Mining Engineering session, I set off a blasting cap in a little plastic box. I also used the VR headset, and simulated experiences with equipment,” Accord said of her 2022 Tech Day experience.

Students will also have the chance to explore the university with an optional campus tour and attend a session to hear from current students and departments including admissions, financial aid, and residence life, about the best ways to prepare for life at college.

“Montana Tech has a really strong family sort of feeling,” Accord said. “Everyone here is so welcoming and nice.”
