Several SPE young professionals from Saudi Arabia along with members of the SPE student chapter at King Fahd U. of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) recently took a trip to Dubai. The students and young professionals spent 4 days learning about the activities and operations of several operator and service companies.

On the first day, participants visited the Baker Hughes facilities at Musfaha in the city of Abu Dhabi and Jebel Ali Free Zone in Dubai. Soran Talabani, Senior Petrophysicist Technical Adviser, gave a brief introduction about Baker Hughes and its different divisions, then explained the company’s specialties and their scope of operation. That was followed by a tour of some of the company’s facilities.

The second day of the trip included a visit to Abu Dhabi Co. and its Onshore Oil Operations Office in Abu Dhabi. Participants were welcomed by Manager Khalid Sahouh and public relations officials. They were then introduced to the company’s business and facilities and listened to presentations on geology, reservoir engineering, and the oil industry. Finally, attendees saw demonstrations of visualization and simulation technology.

The third day included a trip to the SPE Middle East office in the Knowledge Village in Dubai. Ross Davidson, SPE Director of Operations for the office, welcomed the guests and introduced them to the Knowledge Village and the office staff. Both Dubai Natl. Petroleum Co. and the SPE Northern Emirates Chapter expressed their warm welcomes to the visitors.

Karam Sami Al-Yateem, President of the KFUPM SPE Student Chapter, gave a presentation about KFUPM, its petroleum engineering department, and the KFUPM SPE Student Chapter mission, vision, values, history, membership development, and future plans. This was followed by a group discussion and question-and-answer period. Later, Davidson gave a presentation on SPE’s efforts to broaden the abilities and horizons of students around the world and to encourage young people to be more involved in SPE activities.
