Shell UK is investing in workforce development to support the UK's goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. Through its SkillsTransition program, Shell UK is opening energy-transition skills hubs in Pembrokeshire, Fife, and Aberdeen, in partnership with further-education colleges. These hubs will provide hands-on training in renewable energy technologies, engineering, and welding.
The Pembrokeshire and Fife energy transition skills hubs opened to students in September 2024, while the Aberdeen Energy Transition Skills Hub will open in 2025.
Pembrokeshire College features a virtual systems control room for immersive training in offshore wind and energy operations. The college announced its plans to train 600 individuals by 2026 with knowledge and experience to work for projects such as offshore floating wind farms and Haven hydrogen power plants.
"It is the latest important step to ensure the energy transition is an opportunity for everyone,” said Anthony Harte, head of social impact for Shell UK.
Fife College is developing a NanoGrid to simulate an electric grid, enhancing practical learning in energy-system maintenance. According to the university, the state-of-the-art hub will provide immersive, hands-on learning experiences, equipping students with practical skills and knowledge in renewable energy technologies, including SmartGrids, wind, and solar PV systems.
The university also announced its plans to evolve the NanoGrid over the next 3 years to include features such as hydrogen-energy storage, EV charging points, and smart home integrations as renewable energy technology develops further.
"Our new Fife College energy transition skills hub is part of our ambition to support 15,000 people into jobs with a focus on the energy transition by 2035,” said Pauline McGeevor, community liaison officer at Shell UK.
North East Scotland College (Aberdeen) will focus on welding and engineering, supporting thousands of learners and workers over 5 years.
Shell UK is also collaborating with Connectr and ESP to create an Energy Transition Skills Leaders program, fostering best practices in education. The company announced it is planning to invest in a series of energy transition skills hubs across Great Britain, including in England.
