South Sudan has opened its first-ever public university in Bentiu, Unity State, expanding higher education opportunities in the country’s oil-producing region. Bentiu University coordinator Kel Malual Latjor told Radio Tamazuj that the opening of the Bentiu University of Petroleum is part of the government’s broader effort to improve access to higher education nationwide.
The university is now accepting students and will offer programs in petroleum engineering, environmental studies, computer science, management, and information technology, with more disciplines planned.
Officials say the university aims to train oil and gas specialists and become a regional center of excellence, while students welcome the opportunity to study locally without traveling to Juba or other states.
“Bentiu has been designated this year as an admission center by the Ministry of Higher Education, and people in Unity State are very excited,” Latjor said.
