Two University of Houston petroleum engineering professors, Ganesh Thakur, 2012 SPE President, and George K. Wong, SPE, have received four Ocean Energy Safety Institute grants totaling $1.1 million to study deepwater Gulf of Mexico reservoirs.

The projects focus on reservoir simulation and statistical analysis, aiming to evaluate production strategies, compare reservoir parameters, and improve estimated ultimate recovery.

Research began in August 2025, with draft results due by November and final findings expected by February 2026.
