Emerson and HeroX are launching two global innovation competitions to advance flow-measurement technology in critical industrial systems. The challenges invite engineers, materials scientists, and inventive thinkers to develop next-generation solutions that enhance the reliability, accuracy, and lifespan of flow-measurement systems used in vital industrial processes.

The Electrode Code
This challenge targets electrode fouling in electromagnetic flowmeters, a persistent issue that causes inaccurate readings and high maintenance costs in industrial systems.

Emerson and HeroX are seeking durable, PFAS-free, and conductive materials or self-cleaning mechanisms that can prevent or remove buildup of paraffin, scale, and particulates. Solutions must withstand extreme industrial conditions, maintain signal integrity, and comply with REACH and RoHS standards while being compatible with existing systems to improve reliability and uptime.

The Emerson License to Flow Challenge
This competition addresses acid corrosion and mechanical wear in Coriolis flowmeters, where harsh chemicals like sulfuric acid and sodium hydroxide degrade stainless-steel components.

Innovators are invited to design protective linings or coatings that provide long-lasting, uniform resistance to corrosion without affecting flowmeter accuracy. Solutions must also meet environmental and safety standards, minimize PFAS use, and demonstrate strong adhesion and durability under pressure and temperature extremes.

“True innovation happens when industry leaders invite the world to help tackle their toughest challenges,” said Jamie Elliott, VP of customer success, HeroX.

Winners from each competition will share a $30,000 prize pool and could also have the chance to work directly with Emerson’s global R&D and manufacturing teams to turn their ideas into commercial products.

Eligibility To Compete and Win Prize(s)

Participation is open to individuals and teams worldwide who are 18 years or older. Teams may come from universities, startups, corporations, or independent inventor groups, as long as they comply with all applicable US and international competition laws.
