US News Releases 2025 Top 10 Petroleum Engineering Graduate School Programs

The University of Texas at Austin grabs the top spot, with Texas A&M and Colorado School of Mines rounding out the top three.

US News and World Report has released its ranking of the top graduate schools for petroleum engineering. US News' best engineering school ranking helps students identify suitable programs by comparing schools based on research activity, faculty resources, student achievements, and peer/employer assessments.

The top 10 include:

1. The University of Texas at Austin
2. Texas A&M University
3. Colorado School of Mines
4. The Pennsylvania State University
5. The University of Tulsa
6. Stanford University
7. The University of Houston
8. Louisiana State University
9. The University of Oklahoma
10. Texas Tech University

According to US News, between fall 2024 and early 2025, 222 engineering schools that grant doctoral degrees were surveyed. In total, 196 responded with the necessary data and were ranked, while the remaining 26 were not ranked but still had their data displayed in their profiles.

Rankings are based on nine weighted factors emphasizing research productivity (50%), quality assessment (25%), faculty resources (20%), and student selectivity (5%).
