Times are turbulent across the globe as the ongoing responses to the pandemic remain varied. The oil and gas industry—and SPE members—remain affected personally and professionally by its effects on the supply/demand balance, the oil price, and the energy transition.

I begin this column by saying that after attending several recent SPE events filled with students and professionals, all virtual of course, that I have seen the very best of us as members of SPE. To a person, you all have been nothing short of inspiring.

This is a particularly hard column to prepare. It is early October and I had hoped to tell you how being an SPE member and being an active part of SPE was part of your professional responsibilities/duty. It is, but we will save that discussion for later.

During the recently held 2020 SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE), winners of SPE regional student paper contests competed for the international prize in three categories: undergraduate, master's, and PhD. The contests were broadcast around the world to the judging panel. Winners were announced at the Student Award Ceremony held the next day.

Drillbotics, the international competition for universities to design and build a small drilling rig is accepting registrations for the 2021 Drillbotics Competition. The contest is annually run by the SPE’s Drilling Systems Automation Technical Section (DSATS).
