An assessment by the US Geological Survey says that geothermal energy resources in Nevada’s Great Basin and nearby states could generate up to 10% of the current US electricity supply, far surpassing the current output of less than 1%.

The report states that the Mowry Composite Total Petroleum System, located in southwest Wyoming and northeast Colorado, contains 473 million bbl of undiscovered, technically recoverable oil and 27 Tcf of natural gas.

The USGS has assessed that the Los Angeles Basin holds 61 million bbl of technically recoverable oil and 240 Bcf of gas still undiscovered.

The USGS report finds 47 million bbl of oil and 876 Bcf of natural gas remain undiscovered in upper Paleozoic reservoirs within Wyoming’s Wind River, Bighorn, and Powder River basins, as well as parts of southern Montana, South Dakota, and Nebraska.

The joint industry program will explore the potential of geologic hydrogen as a low-carbon energy source.

The new facility will house more than 400 researchers from both institutions.
