University of Pittsburgh Launches Hybrid Energy Engineering Degree

The university's new undergraduate program in natural gas, renewables, and oil engineering will train students in both traditional oil and gas cirricula and renewable energy.

The University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering announced it will introduce a new undergraduate program in natural gas, renewables, and oil engineering (GRO), blending petroleum engineering with renewable energy systems. Offered through the department of chemical and petroleum engineering, the program will train students in both traditional oil and gas expertise and advanced training in renewables such as solar, wind, hydro, biofuels, energy storage, and carbon management.

The curricula includes standard petroleum courses in geology, drilling, production, and reservoir engineering, alongside eight required renewable energy courses.

“We developed a hands-on program that meets current needs while futureproofing our graduates’ careers, enabling them to move seamlessly between industries,” said Robert Enick, professor and vice chair of research who led the program design.

Recruitment begins in 2026, with the first cohort starting the following fall.
