The Annual Students’ Technical Symposium and Exhibition remains one of the most anticipated conferences for student members of SPE. Held between 26–28 March, the event brings together students from over 20 SPE sections across Nigeria for technical sessions, networking, and competitive engagements.

Among its many highlights, the SPE PetroBowl Competition stands out as a fan favorite. This was evident from an in-house survey conducted among delegates, where over 38.5% identified the PetroBowl as the most anticipated activity, ahead of panel sessions at 16.8%. Notably, participation in the competition begins even before the conference, with an online qualifying round from which 20 schools advanced to the main event.

The SPE University of Ibadan Student Chapter PetroBowl team began its rise to prominence in 2023 at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), after several years of near misses. This success was sustained in 2024 at the University of Uyo, where the team secured a hard-fought victory against the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE), a familiar rival.

In 2025, at Bayero University, Kano, the team set out to achieve a historic third consecutive win. However, this ambition was cut short following a quarterfinal loss to Obafemi Awolowo University, who eventually emerged champions. The defeat was a significant setback; not only did it end their title run, but it also meant missing out on opportunities at regional and international levels, as well as the chance to attend the NAICE conference as sponsored delegates.

Following this loss, a new team emerged, led by Mubarak Olasunkanmi (team captain), alongside Daniel Adesanya, Yesiri Olatigbe, Ugochukwu Kenechukwu, and Oserugueguemen Erazua. United by a shared goal to reclaim the title, the team adopted a deliberate and structured approach to preparation. This included gathering relevant study materials, distributing topics based on individual strengths, and engaging in intensive practice sessions.

Despite these efforts, the team faced another challenge at the interchapter competition, where they finished third behind the University of Lagos, who went on to win the title. This outcome, however, proved to be a turning point. It prompted a reassessment of their strategy and led to an even more focused and disciplined preparation phase.

At the 2026 PetroBowl competition, the team’s preparation translated into consistent and dominant performances. Their journey to the title included matchups against PTI (host institution) in the round of 16, the University of Calabar in the quarterfinals, the University of Uyo in the semifinals, and finally FUPRE in the final. Across all rounds, the team maintained a strong lead, often scoring at least twice as many points as their opponents.

At the end of the competition, Olasunkanmi was named most valuable player, alongside Evans Evro from the University of Lagos.

The victory marked a significant milestone for the team and a successful culmination of months of preparation, resilience, and teamwork.

Looking ahead, the journey continues. The team now sets its sights beyond the national stage, with the ambition to compete and excel at the regional level. Their next challenge lies at the Africa PetroBowl Competition, scheduled to take place at Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya.
