SPE’s Human Factors Technical Section worked to create new questions for the competition’s regional qualifiers.

The addition of human-factors questions to the pool of questions will provide future engineers across the energy sector with an opportunity to gain more knowledge on human factors, human-factors-related regulation, industry guidance, and organizations promoting human factors.

The Covid-19 pandemic nearly stopped the PetroBowl event from happening. A software built by SPE members created an opportunity to continue the competition virtually.

PetroBowl is a fast-paced, quiz-bowl-style competition between SPE student chapters from around the world covering technical and nontechnical topics related to petroleum engineering. During the 2019 SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition in Calgary, LSU emerged as the world champions.

Students representing 32 SPE student chapters from across the globe have been selected to participate in the annual SPE student quiz competition, PetroBowl. The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) SPE student chapter won the 2017 PetroBowl championship, defeating the University of Benin team. UNAM was also the winner of the championship in 2015. The University of Oklahoma team came in third.

The Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) SPE Student Chapter team won the 2016 PetroBowl Championship held at the SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) in Dubai on 26 September. The 2016 edition of the SPE student members quiz competition, PetroBowl, will be held at the SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition in Dubai on 26 September. Out of the 125 SPE student chapter teams that participated in regional qualifiers, 36 teams have been selected for competing in the championship. Selected teams from each region are listed here.
