During the recently held 2020 SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE), winners of SPE regional student paper contests competed for the international prize in three categories: undergraduate, master's, and PhD. The contests were broadcast around the world to the judging panel. Winners were announced at the Student Award Ceremony held the next day.

Drillbotics, the international competition for universities to design and build a small drilling rig is accepting registrations for the 2021 Drillbotics Competition. The contest is annually run by the SPE’s Drilling Systems Automation Technical Section (DSATS).
