AIME celebrates its 150th anniversary.
AIME

On 16 May, the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME) will mark its 150th anniversary.

Founded in May 1871, 22 engineers came together to form an association dedicated to advancing the production of metals, minerals, and energy resources through the application of engineering.

This founding group’s goals were "the more economical production of useful minerals and metals and ... the greater safety and welfare of those employed in these industries.”

As AIME continued to grow, it decentralized and formed four independently operated member societies.

  • SME (Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration)
  • TMS (The Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society)
  • AIST (Association for Iron & Steel Technology)
  • SPE (Society of Petroleum Engineers)

SPE became a separately incorporated organization in 1985. Learn more about SPE history.

AIME Supports Member Societies

AIME's mission is to support its member societies. These funds make possible forward-reaching programs including interdisciplinary projects and forums, awards, scholarships, and grants.
