Azule Energy found approximately 500 million bbl of oil in place with its Algaita-01 exploration well offshore Angola.

The well, spudded 10 January by the Saipem 12000 drillship in 667 m water depth, found oil-bearing sandstones in the Upper Miocene reservoir intervals, Azule announced 13 February.

Azule Energy CEO Joe Murphy said in a news release the discovery confirms “the exceptional effectiveness of the petroleum system in Block 15/06.”

The exploration well, where drilling operations wrapped up on 26 January, is about 18 km from the Olombendo floating production, storage, and offloading vessel. Murphy said the proximity to nearby producing facilities further enhances the value of the discovery.

Advanced formation evaluation logging was conducted to assess reservoir quality and fluid characteristics. Azule, which is a 50/50 joint venture between BP and Eni, said preliminary interpretation of wireline logging and fluid sampling indicates the presence of multiple reservoir intervals with excellent petrophysical properties and fluid mobilities.

Azule operates Block 15/06 in the Lower Congo Basin with 36.84% interest on behalf of partners Sonangol E&P with 36.84% interest and SSI Fifteen Limited with 26.32%.

In July 2025, Azule announced the Gajajeira-01 gas discovery in block 1/14 in Angola.
