Chevron has joined the long-term digital subsurface collaboration established by SLB and TotalEnergies to advance subsurface workflows.

SLB announced on 6 October that Chevron Technical Center, a division of Chevron U.S.A. Inc., had joined the decade-long collaboration established by SLB and TotalEnergies in July 2024 to co-develop digital technologies for reservoir engineering and geoscience.

The collaboration, known as Arena, builds on the partnership that delivered the Intersect reservoir simulator. Chevron will contribute financially, as well as provide intellectual property and technical expertise, including capabilities in uncertainty analysis, optimization, and field-development planning, to help shape the roadmap for scalable digital subsurface technologies.

By embedding TotalEnergies and Chevron subject-matter experts within SLB technology centers, the collaboration is expected to shorten traditional feedback loops between operators and product development teams and bring operational perspectives directly into technology development. SLB said the model progresses the delivery of scalable, open, and extensible digital technologies.

Rakesh Jaggi, president of SLB’s digital business, said in a press release that the collaboration brings SLB’s digital and subsurface expertise together with operator knowledge to help develop technologies for reservoir engineering and geoscience.

“Chevron adds valuable experience and perspectives that will help strengthen how we address complex subsurface workflows and field-development decisions,” he said.

Jitendra Kikani, Chevron’s vice president of subsurface, said in the press release the operator is focused on advancing digital capabilities to unlock greater value from subsurface resources.

“Through Arena, we are combining our world-class expertise in uncertainty analysis with digital technologies and AI-enabled workflows to improve decision quality, accelerate insights, and enhance operational efficiency,” he said.

In announcing the collaboration in 2024, TotalEnergies said the partners would jointly develop digital tools to improve subsurface modeling to optimize production and make it more responsible, with the technologies building on the Intersect reservoir simulator.
