
Edward E. Horton III, SPE, died on 13 August 2015 at the age of 87. He was known for his contributions to the offshore oil and gas industry and is recognized as the inventor of the tension leg platform and the spar. During the 1960s, Horton worked as a principal engineer for the ;National Academy of Sciences on the Mohole deepwater drilling project. He served in executive roles at many offshore engineering firms, including as vice president at Ocean Science and Engineering and founder and president of Deep Oil Technology. Before joining the offshore industry, he served in the US Navy. Horton was the recipient of many engineering honors, such as the Offshore Technology Conference’s Distinguished Achievement Award for Individuals in 1997 and the SPE Projects, Facilities, and Construction Award in 2004, and was named an Offshore Pioneer by the Offshore Energy Center in 2008. He was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in 2002. Horton held a BA in civil engineering from Yale University and an MS in petroleum engineering from University of Southern California.
