This paper aims to demonstrate how innovations in wireless measurement technology – together with ‘Internet of Things’ data capture and processing opportunities – can offer the prospect of improving wellsite safety and operational efficiency while reducing costs – with benefits for oil companies, service partners, and operatives on both new and legacy installations.

Wellsite operations – from new explorations to workovers of existing wells – require many forms of real-time load and pressure monitoring. As most current load cells transmit data by wire, their cables can represent tripping hazards for operatives, while breakages are a common cause of non-productive time. Moreover, with a multiplicity of legacy systems in use, much of the real-time load measurement data goes unrecorded and is thus unavailable for subsequent analysis aimed at improving operational efficiency.

This paper has been prepared by experts from bespoke high-quality load measurement technology manufacturer Strainstall, together with leading supplier of oilfield services, products, technology and systems to the worldwide oil and natural gas industry, Baker Hughes, a GE company. Together they outline the benefits in safety and wellsite efficiency that can be leveraged from the implementation of wireless measurement technology and Internet of Things (IoT) style data capture and processing, leveraging the data generated from multiple sources.

The benefits of moving to wireless load measurement are illustrated in a range of wireline logging, slickline and mud pressure measurement-while-drilling (MWD) application examples that have already been developed. In these cases, the core of the system is an advanced, hazardous area zone 1/Class 1 div 2 certified transponder unit, logging system interface and remote handset control unit developed by Strainstall based on a requirements specification informed by Baker Hughes’ extensive wellsite operational experience. This system enables load cells, pressure transducers and other sensors to communicate wirelessly with wellsite control, monitoring and data handling systems.
