Dato' Mohamad Idris Mansor, SPE, passed away on 22 May 2025. He was the CEO of Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd from 1989 to 2000. Prior to that, Mansor worked for Petronas since 1976, serving a variety of roles including petroleum engineer in the production department, production manager (1977–1980), and later joined Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Petronas, serving as the deputy general manager, technical (1980–1984) and general manager (1984–1989). He was appointed senior vice president and board member of Petronas from October 1993 until his retirement, after which he served as advisor to the E&P business for another year. He was then appointed to the Petronas Board of Directors from 2010 to 2019.
An SPE member since 1996, Mansor served on the Board of Directors of the SPE Asia Pacific entity from 1995 to 2014, and as its chairman from 1996 to 2004. He also served on the Board of Directors for the International Petroleum Technology Conference (IPTC) from 2011 to 2015, and chairman of the IPTC Board between 2013 and 2014. His dedicated service and success in securing strong support from regional national oil companies (NOCs) were instrumental in establishing IPTC as a premier event in Asia.
He received the SPE Distinguished Member Award in 2001 and was recognized as a SPE Century Club Member in 2005 for recruiting more than 100 members. Mansor was instrumental in the establishment of the SPE office in Kuala Lumpur and in bringing the Offshore Technology Conference to Asia.
He held a degree in mining from Camborne School of Mines (UK), an MSc in mining geology and exploration from the University of Leicester (UK), and an MS in petroleum engineering from The University of Tulsa. He also received an honorary doctor of science degree from the University of Exeter.
