Japan’s JGC Awarded Contract for Coral North FLNG in Mozambique

The Coral Norte FLNG is to be the mirror image of the Coral Sul unit, which shipped its first cargo in 2022 after it was put into service in Area 4 offshore Mozambique.

The Eni-led Mozambique Rovuma Venture has awarded the engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning (EPCIC) contract for a second floating liquefied natural gas unit (FLNG) in the Rovuma Basin, Area 4 as part of the Italian major’s $7.2 billion development plan for the deepwater Coral Norte gas field.

JGC France, in partnership with Technip Energies France and Samsung Heavy Industries Co. of South Korea, will execute the $5-billion lump-sum turnkey contract on behalf of the Area 4 partners—Eni (operator), CNPC, ENH, XRG, and Kogas—JGC announced on 8 June in a news release.

The Coral Nord FLNG unit will boast a production capacity of approximately 3.6 mtpa and will be installed on the Coral gas field, about 50 km offshore northern Mozambique.

With first LNG expected in 2028, the unit will mirror the already-producing Coral Sul FLNG facility, which exported its first cargo in 2022 and remains Mozambique’s only active LNG project among government-sanctioned facilities.

Like Coral Sul, the Coral Norte project will produce from six subsea wells to be tied back to the new FLNG unit. Coral Norte and Coral Sul will produce from the same reservoir, which Eni estimates holds between 450 and 500 Bcm of natural gas.

Under the contract, JGC France and Technip Energies, through their joint venture, will be primarily responsible for the engineering and procurement of the FLNG topside facilities, as well as overall project management. Samsung Heavy Industries will undertake the engineering, procurement, and construction of the FLNG hull and the fabrication of the topside modules.

JGC Group estimates its share of the $5-billion award at $1 billion. The Coral North Project is Mozambiqe’s second FLNG development after Coral South for which JGC Group, Technip Group, and Samsung Heavy Industries also executed the EPCIC works.

JGC Group holds a leading position in the FLNG sector, having participated in multiple projects worldwide, including FLNG developments for Petronas in Malaysia. Its broader LNG portfolio includes the Ruwais LNG project in the UAE, as well as front-end engineering design work for projects in Canada, Mozambique, and Indonesia.
