New robotics technology company Vaarst hopes to give offshore robotics new capabilities by retrofitting artificial intelligence and autonomy.

Vaarst, a spinoff from subsea robotic and hydrographic survey company Rovco, was formally launched in March with the goal of revolutionizing the offshore robotics sector. The new company wants to accelerate advancement in ocean robotics by providing access to artificial-intelligence technology to marine and subsea providers for autonomous robotic work.

“Autonomous robotics are the key to reducing the cost of offshore operations,” Brian Allen, Vaarst’s founder and chief executive officer, said. “At the same time, digitalization of field assets is essential as the industry evolves; marrying these two concepts is needed to realize the real benefit of modern tech. It’s the data that has to drive the vehicles.”

Vaarst is targeting the energy and marine sectors through its technologies, such as the SubSLAM X2, a data-collection system that delivers robotic spatial awareness data and live 3D point clouds to any device in the world.
