Scotland-based drilling company Odfjell Drilling reported that it lost a blowout preventer (BOP) in an incident on the Deepsea Atlantic rig on 18 April in the North Sea.

The company said the incident caused no injuries and that the rig is secure.

The BOP dropped to the seabed at an approximate depth of 1,100 m. Work on the Deepsea Atlantic has been suspended while the BOP is recovered. Odfjell said it has launched an investigation into the incident. The rig is currently under contract with Equinor and was drilling in the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

The Deepsea Atlantic, delivered in 2009, is a sixth-generation deepwater and harsh-environment semisubmersible designed for work in water depths up to 3,000 m.
