SPE’s Bylaws spell out the membership of a Nominating Committee charged with developing a slate of candidates for open positions, which are recommended to the Board of Directors for review and approval.

The Nominating Committee identifies the best candidate for each position, weighing factors such as experience, prior service to SPE, and geographic diversity (except for Regional Director roles). These candidates are presented to the Board of Directors for discussion and ratification. Once approved by the Board, the candidates' names and brief background are published in JPT. See 2023 Board Nominees.

The SPE Bylaws also state that:

Additional nominations may be submitted to the Board of Directors by petition from at least one percent (1%) (as of the preceding 1 January) of the voting members of the Corporation, provided that such nominees meet the requirements for the position. If the required number of signatures are received for a petition, then a ballot election will be held between the successful petition candidate and the Board approved nominee.

SPE has received a request from Dr. Marc Haci to propose three alternate candidates for 2023–2025 Board positions. For an election to be held, these candidates must first have the support of 1% of the voting members of SPE on a petition.

On 6 July 2022 all SPE professional members will receive an email with a link to review the candidates' qualifications, and if desired, sign the nomination petition for each candidate. View the candidates. Only SPE professional members will be able to endorse the petition for a candidate. The nomination petition will be open through 1 August 2022.
