Preparing the Next-Generation Workforce for the Digital Transformation of the Oil and Gas Industry

In this 30-minute interview, Angela Dang Atkinson, a data scientist with Cognite, talks about what skills beyond technology new petroleum engineers need and what challenges they will face in the digital oil field.

Preparing the next-generation workforce for the digital transformation of the oil and gas industry is a critical task. The Big Crew Change is largely over, and a new generation is taking its place in the industry. In this 30-minute interview, Angela Dang Atkinson, a data scientist with Cognite, talks about what skills beyond technology new petroleum engineers need and what challenges they will face in the digital oil field.

Overcoming the new challenges that the digital transformation is bringing will require cooperation between the new, younger engineers and those with more experience, Atkinson said. “I really think it’s important from both sides to bridge that gap,” she said. “And unfortunately, or fortunately, that requires building soft skills on both parts to be able to build the relationship based on trust and mentorship in both directions.”
