Having had the privilege of reviewing reservoir surveillance papers over recent years, I see one message becoming increasingly clear: The industry is no longer short of measurements; the real challenge is converting them into timely reservoir decisions that protect value.
That challenge is becoming more urgent as the industry depends increasingly on mature fields and existing infrastructure. An analysis by the International Energy Agency of around 15,000 oil and gas fields indicates that, without continued investment, global oil production would decline by about 8% annually, or roughly 5.5 million B/D each year. This underlying decline places greater emphasis on extracting more value from existing assets, where surveillance must support increasingly complex redevelopment, injection, connectivity, and well‑placement decisions.
The selected papers show how this need is being addressed across different producing regions. Paper OTC 36701, from a mature thin-oil-rim brownfield in Malaysia, demonstrates how time-lapse saturation surveillance and reservoir‑model updates can reduce uncertainty and safeguard redevelopment value.
Paper SPE 230423, from the mature ACG field in the Caspian region, illustrates how proactive surveillance, multidisciplinary pattern reviews, and targeted data acquisition can strengthen infill, completion, and decline-management decisions.
Paper SPE 231704, from a giant presalt reservoir offshore Brazil, shows how tracer, production, and injection data can be integrated through fuzzy logic to quantify interwell connectivity, update reservoir understanding, and guide injection distribution.
Together, these papers reflect a broader evolution in reservoir surveillance. New technology remains important, but its value depends on whether it can be incorporated into existing wells, models, infrastructure, and operating workflows. As reservoirs and infrastructure mature, surveillance must begin with a decision, not a tool, and end with action before value is lost.

Muhammad Navaid Khan, SPE, is senior specialist for reservoir engineering at the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). With over 20 years of experience across Middle Eastern reservoirs, he leads ADNOC’s Integrated Reservoir Management Program and provides strategic direction for the field-development portfolio of both offshore and onshore assets. Khan holds a master’s degree in petroleum engineering from Heriot-Watt University and received the 2015 SPE Middle East and North Africa Regional Service Award. He has been actively involved with SPE, where he currently chairs SPE’s Integrated Reservoir Management Technical Section, co-leads the Reservoir Surveillance and Management Subcommittee under the SPE Global Reservoir Advisory Committee, and serves on the JPT Editorial Review Board. Khan’s contributions were recognized with the 2015 SPE Regional Service Award for the Middle East and North Africa Region.
