Sparrows Awarded 5-Year Tengiz Inspection Contract

Sparrows Group was awarded a 5-year contract with Tengizchevroil (TCO) to deliver specialist lifting inspection services for the Tengiz field in Kazakhstan.

Under the contract, Sparrows will conduct premobilization and annual inspections for mobile cranes, gantry cranes, forklifts, and boom trucks. The company will also manufacture custom-built wire rope slings to suit TCO’s operational and drilling requirements.

The Tengiz plant comprises five oil and gas processing trains and employs several vendors on site. TCO employs an inspection team to ensure all TCO and vendor equipment is inspected in accordance with the stated regulations for the reliability of equipment. Sparrows was first awarded the contract with TCO in 2004, and the latest award will extend their relationship to 20 years.

Under its services, Sparrows ensures supply of qualified and competent inspectors, inspection and certification services to both TCO and its contractors for all lifting equipment, certification management, training for end-user of lifting equipment, and incident investigations involving any lifting equipment.

Ranked as the world’s deepest producing supergiant oil field, the prolific Tengiz field is an onshore reservoir located in north-west Kazakhstan. Operator TCO is a partnership of Chevron (50%), KazMunayGas (20%), ExxonMobil Kazakhstan (25%), and LukArco (5%) formed in 1993. In 2016, TCO approved two interconnected projects to further develop the field—the Wellhead Pressure Management and the Future Growth project. A total of 81 process and utility modules in South Korea, 5 gas turbine generators in Italy, and 75 pipe rack modules in Kazakhstan were built for on-site installation. Both projects will help boost daily production to approximately 1 million B/D and first oil is expected in 2022.
