The oil and gas major has set aside $100 million to fund projects that will deliver new greenhouse gas emissions reductions in its upstream oil and gas operations.

Royal Dutch Shell said on 14 March that it planned to reduce carbon emissions from its oil and gas operations and product sales by 2–3% during the 2016–2021 period, the first time the company has issued carbon footprint targets.

Concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere surged at a record-breaking speed in 2016 to the highest level in 800,000 years, according to the World Meteorological Organization's Greenhouse Gas Bulletin. The abrupt changes in the atmosphere witnessed in the past 70 years are without precedent.

On 16 June 2017, the Alberta Oil Sands Advisory Group released its report Recommendations on Implementation of the Oil Sands Emissions Limit Established by the Alberta Climate Leadership Plan.
