Project InnerSpace Launches GeoMap Europe

GeoMap Europe is the latest in a series of interactive global geothermal maps that combine large subsurface and surface data sets to highlight where geothermal resources and development opportunities are strongest for power, heat, cooling, and storage.

Europe is the latest region to join Project InnerSpace’s series of GeoMaps. The free, continentwide mapping platform compiles decades of subsurface data to highlight Europe’s significant geothermal energy potential. The map integrates millions of surface and subsurface data points into the geothermal exploration platform.

GeoMap Europe highlights where geothermal potential is strongest, including

  • High-temperature resources for power generation: High-temperature resources in areas including Iceland, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Hungary, and France can support renewable power generation.
  • Significant district heating potential: Major cities including Paris, Munich, Vienna, Budapest, Berlin, Warsaw, Amsterdam, and Barcelona could expand or develop geothermal district heating networks to boost domestic heat supplies.
  • Industrial clusters co-located with areas of geothermal heat: Industrial regions in northern Italy, northern France, and Germany’s Nordrhein-Westfalen could use geothermal heat for manufacturing processes to accelerate decarbonization.
  • Data center cooling and subsurface energy storage via geothermal: Geothermal can support data center cooling in areas including the Upper Rhine Graben, Paris Basin, and Dutch and Hungarian basins. Thick sedimentary regions in northern Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands also offer potential for subsurface energy storage.

"If Europe moves quickly to launch its next chapter of geothermal development, energy independence and decarbonization are the dual prize. GeoMap Europe is the tool that will give developers, researchers, and governments a clear picture of where to get started,” said Jamie Beard, executive director of Project InnerSpace.

GeoMap Europe is the latest GeoMap in a series including South America, Africa, North America, India, Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East.
