SBM Offshore has signed a contract with BP Exploration and Production for the wet-tow and installation of the Kaskida semisubmersible floating production unit (FPU) destined for the deepwater US Gulf of Mexico (GOM).

The Kaskida field is a greenfield, 20,000-psi Paleogene development located approximately 250 miles southwest of New Orleans, in Keathley Canyon Block 292.

“SBM Offshore’s commitment to excellence and innovation in the offshore industry is highlighted by this project, paving the way for future growth for our installation activities,” said Olivier Icyk, chief business officer at SBM. “Our pioneering spirit and deepwater expertise have been key differentiators in securing this contract.”

SBM Offshore has installed more than 150 floating systems worldwide.

Seatrium Limited was tapped by BP at the end of 2024 to perform engineering, procurement, construction, and onshore commissioning work for the Kaskida FPU.

Comprising a single topside module supported by a four-column semisubmersible hull, the Kaskida FPU is supported by subsea production wells located in a water depth of approximately 6,000 ft. The Kaskida FPU will have the capacity to produce 80,000 BOPD from six wells in the first phase of development. The topsides for Kaskida will be integrated and lifted to the hull using Seatrium’s Goliath twin cranes with a combined lifting capacity of 30,000 tonnes.

Other work awarded to date includes an integrated engineering, procurement, construction, and installation contract related to the subsea systems to TechnipFMC, and supply of a subsea boosting system to SLB OneSubsea.

BP took its final investment decision on the Kaskida fieldlast July. The FPU will be the operator’s sixth hub located in the GOM. Production from the first phase of development is expected to commence in 2029.

Kaskida was discovered by BP in 2006. The operator said the initial phase of development is targeting recoverable resources of around 275 million bbl of oil.

BP holds a 100% working interest in Kaskida.
