“SPE is the leading technical energy conference and exhibition for global E&P professionals,”, said 2023 SPE President Med Kamal. “As the global energy map continues to shift, ATCE 2023 is focused on leading the discussions around innovation in energy and the technologies building the upstream industry’s road to sustainable solutions and growth.”
The Opening General Session titled “Expanding the Opportunities to Sustainably Fuel the World” featured a panel moderated by Iman Hill, chair of the board of directors of Envorem. Prominent panelists included Kamal, Aaron Ketter, vice president of the Mid-Continent and South Texas Business Unit with Devon, and Andrew Drummond, executive vice president for exploration and development from Woodside Energy. The panelists discussed how industry leaders see the contribution of oil and gas in the energy trilemma.
“We need to work with a sense of urgency to decarbonize our operations, involve other competencies and regulatory bodies, and collaborate with each other where competition is not needed. No single organization, no single industry, and no single country will handle the new challenges alone. We are an essential part of the effort and must work together. We have done it before, and we will do it again,” said Kamal.
In addition to the multidiscipline, peer-selected technical program, ATCE continued its tradition of celebrating the accomplishments of E&P professionals. Thirty-eight members were honored at the Annual Reception and Banquet for their significant contributions to the oil and gas industry and SPE.
On 18 October, Kamal presented the State of the Society at the President’s Luncheon and Annual Meeting of Members. At the luncheon, Kamal passed the gavel to Terry Palisch, the 2024 SPE President. Palisch, vice president of technology and engineering at Carbo Ceramics, shared his vision for the future of SPE and the industry saying, “We will continue to meet the growing demands of the world by providing affordable, secure, and ever-decarbonized energy to humanity. Through SPE, our members will connect with technology, other members, and our external stakeholders so that together we will create our energy future for generations to come."
