SPE Reintroduces Student Membership Fees in 2027 To Strengthen Long-Term Support for Student Programs

Beginning in 2027, SPE will reintroduce tiered student membership fees to sustainably support and strengthen the global programs, resources, and career opportunities that help develop the next generation of energy professionals.

SPE will reintroduce student membership fees beginning in 2027, marking an important shift designed to ensure the long‑term sustainability of SPE’s global student programs.

Student membership fees have always been part of SPE’s membership structure. For more than 2 decades, SPE offered complimentary membership to students thanks to a long-standing corporate sponsorship. As the previous sponsorship has come to an end, and despite efforts to secure a new sponsor, student membership will transition to annual student membership fees based on World Bank country income categories to

  • Sustain and strengthen student programs globally.
  • Ensure SPE can consistently deliver value to students pursuing careers in the energy industry.
  • Reinforce membership as an investment in students’ professional development.
  • Maintain the quality, reliability, and reach of student services.

While the change may reduce total student membership, SPE anticipates a more engaged, career‑focused student community as a result.

Affordability and Tiered Pricing

SPE recognizes that affordability varies across regions. To ensure fairness, student membership fees will follow the same World Bank–based tiered structure used for professional members.

Students may pay individually via credit card, wire transfer, or PayPal, or coordinate with their student chapter or sponsoring section for a group payment. Chapters and sections may also pursue corporate sponsorships to help offset student membership fees.

The Value of Membership

Reintroducing student membership fees does not change the benefits students receive. Instead, it ensures that SPE can continue to deliver them reliably. Student members will maintain access to

  • A global network of industry professionals.
  • Technical content and insights beyond the classroom.
  • Career building opportunities, including competitions, leadership roles, and conferences.
  • A clear pathway into professional membership and early-career development.

Support Beyond Graduation

SPE remains committed to supporting young professionals as they transition into the workforce. Graduates will continue to receive:

  • Year 1 after graduation: membership fees remain at the student rate
  • Year 2 after graduation: membership fees are 50% of the professional rate

The membership fees waiver program also remains available to unemployed graduates.

Looking Ahead

SPE remains open to future sponsorship opportunities and would welcome a partner aligned with supporting student development. Until such a partnership emerges, a membership fee-based model provides the most stable and sustainable path forward.

By reintroducing student membership fees in 2027, SPE is reinforcing its commitment to preparing the next generation of energy professionals, ensuring students continue to receive the programs, resources, and community they need to thrive.
