SPE is transitioning the Human Factors Technical Section to a broader, more aptly named Safety Technical Section (STS). Although we see a potential risk that human factors could lose some of its distinct visibility, we believe this shift is a logical evolution that reflects how safety is managed today across interconnected areas like human performance, risk management, and system resilience.
We believe this integration can elevate the influence of human factors by embedding it more directly into mainstream safety discussions, expanding its reach while maintaining its technical depth. We also see strong value in having the current human factors leadership serve as the founding leadership of the new section, as this would ensure continuity, credibility, and sustained momentum.
At the same time, we believe it is essential to maintain clear and visible representation of human factors within the new structure through dedicated leadership and programming. If implemented thoughtfully, we view this transition as a positive step that strengthens both safety and human factors rather than diminishing them.
The STS falls under the SPE Health, Safety, Environment, and Sustainability (HSES) Discipline and Community.
