Yet the industry still struggles to distinguish between what is directly measured, what is inferred, and what is estimated through models, correlations, or assumptions. That distinction matters. Hubert (Hugh) L. Elkins, an industry pioneer in offshore drilling equipment and technologies, died 18 March 2016. He was 81.

Edgar Rangel-German, SPE, commissioner of Mexico’s regulatory agency National Hydrocarbons Commission (CNH) and one of the key members behind the implementation of Mexico’s recent energy reform for hydrocarbons, died 23 March. He was 42.

Horace Randolph (Randy) Crawford, SPE, died 16 December 2015 at age 87. He was a pioneer in fracture treatment designs and products and was honored as a JPT Legend of Production and Operations in 2009.
