Alberta Awards $37 Million for Next-Generation Drilling Technologies

Winners of Alberta's Drilling Technology Challenge cover a range of technologies from robotics to enhance drilling rig safety to AI-enabled energy management, downhole sensing, well navigation, hybrid power systems, and geothermal energy.

Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA). a not-for-profit which invests in pilot, demonstration, first-of-kind commercial, and commercial-scale projects across sectors including oil and gas, is investing $37 million in 10 projects with a combined value of nearly $179 million. The projects focus on the advancement of innovative drilling technologies, including robotic automation, AI-driven energy management and next-generation geothermal systems, across the oil and gas, geothermal, and critical minerals sectors.

Established in 2009, ERA invests proceeds collected under Alberta’s Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction regulation from large industrial emitters. Grant winners of ERA's Drilling Technology Challenge were announced on 7 July during Calgary's annual "Stampede Rodeo."

Grant Hunter, minister of Environment and Protected Areas, and Justin Riemer, CEO of ERA, were joined by Curtis Cook, president of Rodatherm Energy Corp., and Ashley Fernandes, vice president, drilling engineering and technology at Precision Drilling, in announcing the winners.

“Alberta innovators are advancing world-leading drilling technologies that will create jobs, strengthen competitiveness, reduce emissions, and unlock new opportunities in geothermal energy, critical minerals, and carbon capture," Hunter said.

“Alberta didn’t develop world-leading drilling technology by standing still—we got here by solving hard problems better than others. These investments build on that legacy. We’re taking the same ingenuity that built this province’s energy industry and applying it to the technologies that will define the next generation of resource development globally," Riemer said.

The projects showcase next-generation drilling technologies, including robotic automation to enhance safety on drilling rigs, AI-enabled energy management, advanced downhole sensing, precision well navigation and ranging, hybrid power systems, and geothermal innovations that improve performance while reducing emissions, costs, and operational impacts, ERA said in a news release.

The challenge brings together Alberta innovators with international technology leaders and project partners from Switzerland, Norway, the Netherlands, the US, and across Alberta, reinforcing the province’s role as a global hub for drilling and subsurface technology development.

If successful, the funded projects are estimated to deliver annual greenhouse gas emissions reductions of 24,100 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, about 68,300 cumulative tonnes by 2030, and approximately 308,100 tonnes by 2050. These benefits have significant potential to scale should the technologies be broadly adopted.

The projects include:

  • Borobotics AG. An $8.8 million project (ERA funding: $4.4 million) to develop a compact autonomous electric drilling robot for geothermal boreholes used in ground-source heat pumps. Location: Winterthur, Switzerland, and Calgary.
  • CleanDesign Inc. A $6.83 million project (ERA funding: $2.64 million) to demonstrate a rig-mounted platform to reduce fuel consumption and emissions during drilling by capturing real-time data and automation. Location: Nisku and Lloydminster, Alberta.
  • Eavor Technologies Inc. An $83.33 million project (ERA funding: $8 million) to upgrade Eavor’s core technology with a suite of solutions aiming to access superhot geothermal resources and increase energy output while reducing the levelized cost of electricity. Location: Calgary.
  • GA Drilling. An $11.56 million project (ERA funding: $5 million) to validate modular downhole drilling technology that boosts the speed of well-construction reach and efficiency using real-time sensing and closed-loop automation. Location: Stavanger; Renkum, Netherlands; and Alberta (various).
  • Global Dynamics Inc. A $7.5 million project (ERA funding: $2.25 million) to demonstrate multilateral well re-entry technology to access lateral branches using real-time downhole sensing, directional control, and surface-steered navigation. Location: Alberta (various).
  • Phase Advanced Sensor Systems Corp. A $1.57 million project (ERA funding: $420,000) to develop and test high-temperature downhole pressure sensors for geothermal wells operating above 200°C, where commercially available sensor solutions are currently limited or unavailable. Location: Edmonton.
  • Precision Drilling Corp. A $6.2 million project (ERA funding: $3.1 million) to demonstrate robotic automation and pipe-handling technologies to improve drilling safety, reliability, and operational efficiency through a first-of-kind Alberta field deployment. Location: Nisku, Alberta.
  • Rodatherm Energy Corp. A $46.4 million project (ERA funding: $8 million) to adapt oil and gas drilling solutions and novel wellbore architectures for use in a closed-loop geothermal power system, designed to produce firm, zero-emission electricity. Location: Milford, Utah, and US.
  • Tourmaline Oil Corp. A $3.67 million project (ERA funding: $1.8 million) to demonstrate a hybrid drilling power system that integrates gas blending, battery storage, and intelligent controls to reduce diesel use, emissions, fuel trucking, and operating costs. Location: Alberta Deep Basin Drilling Pads
  • Weatherford Canada Ltd. A $3.51 million (ERA funding: $1.42 million) pilot of real-time sensing and ranging technology that identifies nearby wellbores and subsurface hazards during steam-assisted gravity drainage drilling, improving accuracy while reducing site disturbance and emissions. Location: Northern Alberta.
