The region’s premier upstream event, the SPE/IATMI Asia Pacific Oil & Gas Conference and Exhibition (APOGCE) 2025, held from 14–16 October in Jakarta, Indonesia, welcomed more than 1,500 participants from over 35 countries.

Jointly organised by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and the Indonesian Association of Petroleum Engineers (Ikatan Ahli Teknik Perminyakan Indonesia–IATMI), the conference was themed “Empowering the Future: Strengthening Energy Security and Accelerating Sustainability.”

APOGCE 2025 set the stage for strategic dialogues on how Asia Pacific’s upstream industry can innovate, invest, and collaborate to meet growing energy demand while advancing net-zero goals.

Proudly hosted by Pertamina Hulu Energi, with SKK Migas as the official supporter, the conference offered 3 days of industry dialogue, technical exchange, and collaborative engagement.

Opening the conference, Laode Sulaeman, Director General, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to a fair and balanced energy pathway—one that safeguards energy security while advancing economic growth and decarbonisation.

“Indonesia’s energy transition must remain just, balanced, and inclusive—ensuring energy security while accelerating economic growth through natural gas and advancing decarbonisation via renewables and CCUS,” he said.

Building on this, he shared details of Indonesia’s latest upstream opportunities, announcing the Results of the Tender for Oil and Gas Working Areas Phase I of 2025 and the launch of the Tender Offer for Working Area Phase II of 2025, introducing nine oil and gas blocks for exploration and development across the country.

Among the key highlights, Pertamina Hulu Energi was announced as the awardee of the Lavendar Working Area, which holds an estimated 10 Tcf of gas resources. Laode also witnessed the signing of the Gas Sales Agreement between PT Pertamina Hulu Energi Offshore North West Java and PT Energi Nusantara Perkasa, marking another step forward in Indonesia’s efforts to boost domestic gas utilisation and support the national energy transition.

Representing SKK Migas, Taufan Marhaendrajana, Deputy for Exploitation, outlined Indonesia’s efforts in production as “upstream activities continue to be the backbone of Indonesia’s pursuit of energy self-sufficiency, supported by collaboration, innovation and sustainability to strengthen national energy resilience,” he said.

Oki Muraza, Deputy President Director, PT Pertamina (Persero), highlighted that “Pertamina is pursuing a dual growth strategy—enhancing hydrocarbon production while fast-tracking low-carbon solutions, including CCUS, hydrogen, biofuels, and renewables, to secure a sustainable energy future.”

Collectively, the keynote speakers echoed a unified vision, reinforcing energy security while advancing a lower-carbon future and an innovation-driven industry.

In her welcome remarks, Mery Luciawaty, APOGCE 2025 Conference Chair and Director of Development & Production, PT Pertamina Hulu Energi, said “APOGCE 2025 is truly a gathering point—a confluence of key stakeholders across the energy ecosystem—to open opportunities for investment, address challenges, and build a framework that supports both energy security and sustainability for the future of our industry. Through collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing, we can strengthen our collective ability to empower the energy transition.”

The Executive Plenary Session that followed featured a distinguished line-up of senior leaders: Nanang Abdul Manaf, Senior Advisor, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources; Mery Luciawaty, Director, Development & Production, PT Pertamina Hulu Energi; Taufan Marhaendrajana, Deputy for Exploitation, SKK Migas; Hazli Sham Kassim, Senior Vice President, Malaysia Asset, Upstream and CEO, PETRONAS Carigali, PETRONAS; and Justin J. Murphy, Senior Vice President, Business Development, ExxonMobil Indonesia.

Moderated by Devialina Puspita Dewi, APOGCE 2025 Programme Committee Chair and Vice President, Development Technical Excellence and Coordination, PT Pertamina Hulu Energi, the plenary explored the region’s energy outlook, investment priorities, policy alignment, and the critical role of technology and partnerships in shaping a robust energy future.
