Asia Pacific Poised for Significant Growth in CCS/CCUS Technologies

Paving the way for collaboration, the fourth edition of the SPE Symposium on CCUS management witnessed groundbreaking discussions on innovative strategies and initiatives that accelerate the deployment of CCS and CCUS projects in the region.

The city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, played host to the fourth edition of the “SPE Symposium: CCUS Management in Kuala Lumpur” from 7–8 November, marking a pivotal moment in the quest for innovative strategies and initiatives to propel the deployment of CCUS projects in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region. With over 300 attendees representing 21 countries, the symposium provided a platform for groundbreaking discussions, fostering collaboration and setting the stage for the region's significant growth in CCUS technologies.

The event, operating under the theme "Accelerating Sustainable Growth Through Collaboration and Innovation," brought together industry experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to deliberate on expediting the development and deployment of CCUS technologies in the APAC region. The 2-day symposium was not only a testament to the global interest in CCUS but also a catalyst for change, sparking new ideas and forging connections poised to shape the future of CCUS deployment.

During the keynote session, Hazli Sham Kassim, vice president—Development, Upstream, Petronas, emphasized the formidable challenge faced by the global energy sector in meeting carbon-reduction goals while ensuring an affordable and sustainable energy supply. He said Petronas is committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, highlighting the need for a multipronged approach to balance energy security, environmental sustainability, and economic affordability.

Recognizing the pivotal role of CCUS technologies and infrastructure in achieving net-zero targets and transitioning to clean energy, especially in the APAC region, SPE Asia Pacific has announced a series of upcoming CCUS events. This series includes three Asia Pacific CCUS workshops in 2024 and the development of an Asia Pacific CCUS Conference and Exhibition in 2025.
