In Memoriam: Michael Eberhard

Former SPE Board Member and SPE Distinguished Service Award recipient died June 23.

Michael Eberhard, an SPE Distinguished Service Award recipient and former director of the SPE Rocky Mountain Region, died 23 June.

Eberhard started his 40-year oil industry career as a field engineer for Halliburton Services. He went on to become the company’s Rocky Mountain Technology Manager from 2004 to 2011 and led a multidisciplined team focused on unconventional resources completions and optimization. He was the completions manager for Anadarko Petroleum’s DJ Basin program from 2011 to 2015. He joined SRC Energy in 2015 and was the COO and executive vice president of the company. Eberhard retired in 2020.

A life member of SPE, Eberhard started his many years of SPE volunteerism as a section officer in the San Joaquin Valley Section in 1989. He served in many roles, including serving as the Denver Section chairman twice, leading the section to the SPE President’s Award for Section Excellence during his first term. He also served as a committee member or chairman for numerous Applied Technology Workshops and region meetings. Eberhard was an SPE Distinguished Lecturer on “Multiple Pay Tight Gas Sands, Can the Lessons Learned in the Rockies Help You?” during 2009–2010. He served as the SPE Rocky Mountain Regional Director on the SPE Board from 2012 to 2015. Eberhard was the author or coauthor of several SPE technical papers and industry articles and held a US patent for 3D seismic data conversion. He held a BS degree in mechanical engineering from Montana State University and was a registered professional petroleum engineer in Colorado.
