Ipieca Publishes Fact Sheets on Spill Response for Alternative Fuels and Products

The sheets are intended to allow spill responders to quickly find information on the physicochemical properties of the fuel or product, appropriate response and clean up options, and potential effects on responder health, the environment, and marine life.

As alternative fuels and their associated products become more prevalent in production, manufacturing, and use, their safe handling and prevention of spills is a priority.

Recognizing that spills can happen, Ipieca developed spill response fact sheets for alternative fuels and energy products. The fact sheets allow spill responders to quickly find information on the physicochemical properties of the fuel or product, appropriate response and clean up options, and potential effects on responder health, the environment, and marine life.

The first suite of five includes a fact sheet covering oil characterization, which gives basic information to support the other factsheets on

  • Biomass-based diesel fuels
  • Very-low- and ultralow-sulfur fuel oils
  • Condensates
  • Nonfloating oils

These quick reference tools are the first of a broader series of fact sheets Ipieca is developing. Future fact sheets will cover alternative fuels including ammonia, methanol, and ethanol.
