Risk is a common thread that runs throughout all engineering disciplines. From concept to design, installation to operation and decommissioning, every engineer faces the challenge of making decisions that take risk into account. This online course aims to present how to understand and identify hazards, analyze risk, and understand the importance of a comprehensive management system.
In addition, it will present how artificial intelligence is making its way into real applications to improve process safety.
The last of the six units of the course will introduce codes of conduct and present how professional ethics aids in risk-based decision making.
The course starts with an introduction to the basic understanding of process safety along with the hazards associated with many different engineering disciplines and industry types. Significant emphasis is placed on a risk-based approach in evaluating and reducing the potential for risk. The business case for process safety is also included in this course.
The course is made available to the United Engineering Foundations members at no cost.
The course has the following objectives:
- Describe what is meant by “process safety for all engineers”
- Recognize the importance of process safety management
- Describe of the anatomy of an incident
- Describe at least three risk identification and analysis methods
- Explain the business case for process safety
- Describe the effect of artificial intelligence on process safety
- Explain how ethics applies to engineering decisions
