SPE Launches New Technical Section for Acid Stimulation

The Acid Stimulation Technical Section aims to provide a global home for engineers, scientists, researchers, and practitioners working on acid stimulation in carbonate and sandstone reservoirs.

SPE has formed the Acid Stimulation Technical Section (ASTS). The majority of the world’s hydrocarbon resources are contained in carbonate and sandstone reservoirs. Acid stimulation is widely used in both reservoir types to restore or enhance well productivity. In carbonate formations, acid reacts with the rock matrix to create conductive flow channels and improve reservoir connectivity. In sandstone formations, matrix acidizing is used to dissolve formation-damaging minerals and remove near-wellbore impairment while maintaining formation integrity. Acid stimulation is a specialized discipline requiring fundamental research, rigorous engineering design, and field application expertise.

The goal of this technical section is to provide a global home for engineers, scientists, researchers, and practitioners working on acid stimulation in carbonate and sandstone reservoirs. The section will facilitate the exchange of knowledge and lessons learned, promote best practices and technological advances, and foster collaboration across academia, operating companies, service providers, and technology developers. Through technical conferences, publications, workshops, webinars, and professional networking, ASTS will support the development and application of safer, more effective, and more sustainable acid-stimulation technologies.

Proposed Technical Scope

  • Carbonate acidizing, acid fracturing, wormholing, rock geomechanics/fracturing mechanisms
  • Sandstone matrix acidizing, mineral dissolution, formation-damage removal, and compatibility control
