Construction for the field’s second processing platform begins on the same day the Norwegian authorities approved the plan for development and operation for the biggest field development on the Norwegian continental shelf.

Phase 1 of the development today marked the sail-away from Kværner’s yard of the 560-bed living-quarters topside, the largest of its kind in Norway.

The company plans an innovative application of oceanographic instrumentation to maximize recovery at its Johan Sverdrup oil field in the North Sea.

The technology will provide Equinor a continual feed of updated reservoir information from its Johan Castberg and Johan Sverdrup fields with the aim of improving well placement, production, injection, and—ultimately—recovery.

Equinor submitted the development plan for Phase 2 of the Johan Sverdrup project on 27 August with an increased resource estimate and a cut of NOK 6 billion in investment costs.

By creating a different sort of partnership for a drilling project with close cooperation and greater efficiency built into every detail, including the contracts, Statoil was able to halve the cost of drilling eight wells at its Johan Sverdrup field.

Statoil is going to work to put its enormous Johan Sverdrup discovery into production, showing that even one of the most explored parts of the North Sea still has significant potential.
